Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC), a collection of 10,000 unique ape NFTs, is seeing a surge in sales, driven by the general rise in NFT interest and purchases from celebrities.
The coveted Non-Fungible Tokens have now generated more than $1billion in sales, according to data from Cryptoslam.
This milestone was reached in just the first few days of 2022, with $55 million worth of trades made between January 1 and January 4. One of those buying into the mania was award-winning rapper Eminem, who splashed $462,000 on a Bored Ape in a gold jacket, on January 3.
Other celebrities have also joined in, particularly in the final weeks of 2021. Among them are: Martin Garrix, Post Malone, Diplo and DJ Khaled.
NBA superstar Stephen Curry also splashed $180,000 on a Bored Ape NFT last year.
Companies are also getting on board too. Adidas reportedly purchased one for around $156,000 in September last year.
In total, the Bored Ape collection has over 11,000 unique owners, with the average selling price being 84 ether, or about $344,000 today.
