Former Disney Chief Executive Officer and Chairman Bob Iger has predicted a future where NFTs become huge, and the company he once led gets totally on board in a big way.
Speaking to The New York Times for an episode of its ‘Sway’ podcast, Iger said he believes NFTs will explode, and sees them the same way he saw the baseball cards he collected as a kid.
“They can be digital, and they have meaning to people. And as long as that meaning can be essentially substantiated in a blockchain, I think you’re going to see an explosion of things being created, traded, collected in NFTs,” he said.
He also predicted that Disney will eventually come into the metaverse, saying the possibilities are ‘extraordinary’ for the media conglomerate, owing to all the Intellectual Property they own.
Although Disney has had a few NFT projects, particularly their partnership with VeVe to sell Marvel NFTs, they are currently mostly just a spectator.
Iger however sees a major ‘piracy’ problem, saying that he recently scanned OpenSea and saw an incredible amount of Disney-themed collectibles, none of which are licensed.
He said that Disney may have to create their own metaverse, where they can moderate and monitor user behavior.
“I think something Disney is going to have to consider as it talks about creating a metaverse for themselves is moderating and monitoring behavior.”
